Guidelines

During the past 40 years, Central Florida Black Nurses Association of Orlando, Inc (CFBNA) has provided scholarships to assist individuals pursing a nursing career. The scholarships are presented at the Annual Scholarship and Awards Luncheon each September.

Scholarship

Requirements

  • Must be a member of CFBNA
  • Be a resident of Orange, Seminole, Lake or Osceola County.
  • Accepted or currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program (A.D., B.S.N., Diploma or L.V.N./L.P.N, Masters & Doctoral)
  • Have a cumulative 2.5 GPA or above
  • Have a significant financial need.
  • Show evidence of active participation and/or involvement in community activities.

APPLICATION PERIOD:

APPLICATION PERIOD: April 1st – June 30th of each year

Applications sent via US mail must be postmarked by June 30.

Emailed applications must be received by 11:59pm on June 30.

Applicant must provide:

  1. A fully completed online scholarship application
  2. A letter of acceptance if newly admitted to a nursing program
  3. Two (2) recent official transcripts from an accredited school of nursing (one sent electronically via the transcript clearing house to: cfbnaoforlando@gmail.com, one mailed to CFBNA in a sealed envelope from your school’s registrar. DO NOT open the envelope from the registrar. Mail to: Central FL Black Nurses Association of Orlando, Inc.; c/o Scholarship Committee; P.O. Box 585142; Orlando, FL 32858. Both must be received by June  30th
  4. Two (2) letters of recommendation. One letter from a work supervisor/manager, professor/instructor, co-worker, or other professional. Second letter from a community leader or community organization outlining your work in the community. Letters must be signed and include the address and phone number of the person submitting the recommendation. Recommendation letters can NOT come from family members. 
  5. Essay: one typed page, 500 words max to include your student nurse activities/projects, your ideas on improving the health status of marginalized communities, and your short and long-term nursing goals. Submission should be signed, dated, and labeled “Essay”.  
  6. Signed Participation Pledge
  7. A professional 3×5 color headshot

Mail transcripts to – Central Florida Black Nurses Association, P.O. Box 585142, Orlando, Florida 32858.

Additional requirement:

  1. Upon notification, appear for an interview date TBD in July/August
  2. If selected as a recipient, attend the scholarship and awards luncheon (date TBD annually)
  3. Sign a pledge to actively participate in CFBNA activities at least quarterly

  • Membership application, if not already a member (click link below to apply)
  • Scholarship application with attachments (link below)
  • Participation Pledge (link below)

 

Do NOT submit the scholarship application and the attachments separately. The scholarship application and ALL attachments must be received together. Use the application checklist as a guide for gathering ALL DOCUMENTS PRIOR TO SUBMITTING. DO NOT SEND ATTACHMENTS ONE AT A TIME.

  1. Membership application (if not a current member)

  3. Transcript #2: obtained from registrar’s office and mailed unopened in a sealed envelope
  4. Completed scholarship application, send electronically with all attachments
    • admission letter if newly admitted to a nursing program
    • recommendation letter #1 from manager, instructor, co-worker, or other professional
    • recommendation letter #2 from community leader/organization
    • essay signed and dated
    • participation pledge signed and dated
    • professional color 3×5 headshot
Recommendation letters can not come from family members.

Scholarship Requirements

Provided that completed application, transcripts and references are received by the deadline date, the applicants chosen must:

  • 1. Must be a member of CFBNA at the time of scholarship application submission
  • 2. Must be a resident of Lake, Orange, Osceola, or Seminole County
  • 3. Must be accepted or currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program (LPN/LVN/ADN/ASN/BSN/MSN/DNP/PhD in Nursing)
  • 4. Must have a cumulative 2.5 GPA or above
  • 5. Must have a financial need
  • 6. Must show evidence of active participation in community activities
